FIS Telemark Committee update

Zurich (SUI) - 16 October:

The FIS Telemark Committee had a successful meeting in Zurich primarily looking at details for the upcoming season. Competitions will begin in late November (28th -30th on the Hintertux Glacier (AUT) and the season will end with the World Cup Finals in Rjukan (NOR) in March. In total, racers will compete in 20 World Cup races in Central Europe and Scandinavia.

The spotlight this winter will be the FIS World Championships for both juniors and seniors in Steamboat Springs (USA). All eyes will be on the defending champions, Amelie Reymond (SUI) and Tobias Mueller (GER), both with overall World Cup and individual World Championship titles.

The biggest step this season is the implementation of standard software for timekeeping. Software from the French company Vola will be provided for all Organisers of FIS Telemark World Cups that also automates the transfer of result files to FIS which allows for quicker publishing. At the same time, all provisions for live TV production are met with the new programme. In addition, live streaming will be available from a number of FIS Telemark World Cup events this season.

With these key changes, the Committee hopes to shift the positioning of Telemark Skiing towards greater marketing value and media exposure. Its’ primary strategic goal remains the inclusion of Telemark Skiing onto the programme of the Olympic Winter Games.

British Telemark Championships: 10-22nd January

The British Telemark Championships are a fantastic way to improve your skiing and meet fellow telemarkers. It is a two week trip based in Rauris, Austria. It is organised by the Army, but is open to civilians also. It is always a very enjoyable trip and is well attended by the telemark community.

The first week is coaching followed by a week of races. There are Development races aimed at beginners and everyone else has the opportunity to compete in the Championships races. There are sprint, classic and GS races. The sprint and classic contain a jump, gates, rap and skate section. Check out some World Cup Telemark videos on youtube to give you an idea but don’t let that scare you! These races are open to all abilities.

There is also a mountain race on the last day where telemark is taken back to it’s roots. The skins are brought out and it is a mass start up the mountain…a hot bowl of goulash soup awaits you at the finish line!
