Success for Jasmin Taylor over the weekend

Jasmin said, It’s nice to to be able to finally report some positive news from the season so far. I spent the past weekend racing in two French National Cups and found myself on the Overall and Junior podium both days. The first of the two races was in the cold resort of Ceillac, it was a Classic race, which was very steep with hard-pack snow. I finished with the fastest time, but not by far and my training buddy (and housemate), Madi McKinstry (USA), took the 1st place after I was penalized with three penalties. I finished 2nd in Junior and 2nd Overall that day.

The second day, it was a Sprint race (probably my slightly stronger event of the two) in Puy St.Vincent. The weather was perfect and the course was interesting, with many terrain changes and a good jump. I had a better day skiing wise and took 1st place in Junior and again, 2nd Overall behind Laura Grenier-Soliget (FRA). All in all, a good weekend of racing and now looking forward to the next French Cup this coming weekend.

Well done Jasmin and Madi!

2013 British Championships Race Report

On the 5th January the British Team arrived in the small Austria town of Rauris to commence training in preparation for the British Championships and the second FIS Telemark World Cup of the 2012/13 season.

Joined by over one hundred servicemen and women from across the three services (British Army, Royal Navy and RAF) competition was fierce for podium places in both the Army and Open Championship races.

With the addition of the recently selected Junior Development Team, comprising of: Edward Lees, Nick Henderson and Ollie Wotton the team spent the first five days freeskiing before progressing into GS gates prior to the first Championship race.

As a result of the rising temperatures in the valley, the race jury took the decision to move the opening race up the hill to the Gipfelbahn piste.

Kicking off with GS, racers battled against poor visibility and 30cm of fresh snow on the hill. With less than a second separating the top three men after the first run, Chris Stewart took the gold medal followed by Jack Harvard Taylor and James French.

The following day provided the British racers with similar, challenging conditions for the Sprint Classic race. Again Chris Stewart skied into first place, closely followed by James French and Jack Harvard Taylor finishing in bronze medal position.

On the final day of racing the sun emerged for the Classic race, the longest of the three Championship races. The demanding course started with a flat one hundred metre skate before dropping into a series of open ‘super G’ style gates. Following on from this, athletes where put through their paces with a long GS section before the rap (360 degree banked turn) and uphill skate into the finish. After an exhilarating race Chris Stewart beat Jack and James, finishing with an impressive final skate and clinching the gold medal.

Anna Morrissey Returns to Training

Senior Development Team member Anna Morrissey updates us on her progress as she prepares for the British Championships in Rauris, Austria. “Feels great to be back on snow after a long recovery break from my operation! Have had a fantastic (slightly more relaxed) first week back on my off piste skis. Although its not race training, I find skiing in the deep stuff really helps me improve my balance. I’ve now left France and am training with Chris and Andy Stewart in Obertilliach, Austria. The snow is perfect and it feels great to be back on my race skis!

They (Andy and Chris) have been hugely influential in my previous training so I am looking forward to a week with the two of them before the British Championships start. This week’s training has been organised by Totally Nordic a company run by Alan Eason, ex GB XC skier, who is based here and is going to help us with our skating. Finding motivation to train is not hard with lots of fit young male biathletes running around the place!”
